The police state has been around longer than you, because the US has been a settler-colonial project since the very beginning. It was designed to keep the internal colonies of the United States contained, dominated, and exploited.

the police brutality against the occupations has been pretty minor…

yeah, the internal colonialism model used for blacks ignores the history of actual colonialism against indigenous peoples, but this is important to think about

how does it ignore colonialism against indigenous people? not saying that you’re wrong, but it isn’t something that I’ve heard before. the colonialism against indigenous people certainly has a different character because it is settler-colonialist, but all groups/authors that support the internal colonialism model that I’ve read about or talked to recognize that difference.

the model/analogy obscures the specific histories and contexts of true colonial projects as well confuses to little actual end. it adds little to our understanding of how racial and settler projects operate in the context of the U.S. nation-state, settler colonialism and white supremacy generally. while i understand the imperative set up the analogy in terms of creating solidarities it has largely been disavowed by contemporary antiracist and anti-settler colonial scholars & activists. if you are interested in the critique of the internal colonialism model i would suggest reading Racial Formation in the United States by Michael Omi and Howard Winant
